NATIONAL SOUTH ASIAN A CAPPELLA CHAMPIONSHIP
With the gracious support of the India Center Foundation, the Association of South-Asian A cappella is proud to present the second annual national a cappella championship, All-American Awaaz. On April 21st, 2018, the top eight South Asian a cappella groups in the nation will take the stage to compete for the coveted title of national champion.
Proceeds from this event will benefit Little Kids Rock, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting music education in public schools by providing the resources necessary in order to establish thriving music programs.
Over the last decade, contemporary a cappella has garnered mainstream popularity with the advent of the TV show Glee, motion picture franchise Pitch Perfect, and Grammy award-winning a cappella group, Pentatonix. The popularity has given rise to various subgenres, including South Asian fusion a cappella (also referred to as “Desi a cappella”). South Asian fusion a cappella combines influences from various styles of South Asian music (Carnatic, Hindustani classical, Bollywood, etc.) with Western music (top-chart hits, pop, rock, RnB, etc) to bring an altogether unique sound. The subgenre encourages South Asian American musicians across the country to celebrate their dual cultural identities and collaborate with one another through art.
